Remembrance and Memorials

Remembrance and Memorials

An All Too Brief Remembrance

One hundred years ago, August of 1908, Gretta K. Sprague was born and lived her entire life in a brief 48 hours. She was a "blue baby", a common name for several possible cardiac birth defects. Surgery to correct some of these defects would be developed 36 years later and now, 100 years later, fetal cardiac surgery can done before birth if necessary.

I remember my grandmother bringing me here as a child and helping her place flowers on the grave while she told me Gretta's story. At that time there was a lamb statue atop this small, plain base. I don't know when it disappeared but we were able to find this obscure marker using the cemetery records and map. My father (pictured here) even found the receipt from Oak Grove Cemetery for $10 for the purchase of the grave, a sum that he says represented a week's wage for 50 hours of my grandfather working as a soap cutter for Proctor & Gamble.

I was too young to understand what the loss of her first born meant to my grandmother. The death of a child is something a parent always grieves even when the child is so young. My grandmother went on as women have been doing throughout the ages. My Aunt Elda was born in 1912, my Uncle Tommy in 1920 and my father in 1924 but she never forgot her first, Gretta. She tended the grave, pulling weeds, bringing flowers and sharing her story with me.

It's my turn now to share Gretta's story. Words and images can create a remembrance as effectively as a stone edifice. They take what is remembered, create a record and share it so the remembrance continues. My words and images are the only memorials I can build. It's all I have to offer to Aunt Gretta.

Cherished Memories

Cherished Memories

8/365 This is a shadowbox. It contains items that my family will forever cherish because not including some pictures, its all we have from our 1st born. His name is Chandler. He would have been 6 yrs old in May of this year. He died shortly after birth due to a congenital heart defect. I don't feel that this is one of my better photographs, but it has ALOT of sentimental value. The white blanket on the left was the blanket he was wrapped in after he was born. He was baptized with the bottle of Holy Water by the hospital chaplain. The bible was given to me by a cousin of mine "In Memory of Chandler" . The blue striped outfit was the one we asked the hospital to dress him in after the doctors told us they was nothing more they could do for him without him having to suffer and the angel pin was given to me by my mom while I was in labor. R.I.P. baby boy. You will forever hold a special place in my heart.
